Wintek to pay more compensation to poisoned China workers

Chief Financial Officer of Wintek Corp., Jay Huang said in a telephonic interview, “If they feel they need more compensation to be satisfied, then we’re willing to discuss it case by case.”

The fact
91 workers of Wintek, poisoned by N-hexane, have already been paid nearly 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) by the Taichung, Taiwan-based Company as well as a supplier of touch panel displays to Apple Inc., HTC Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co.

In a May 17 exchange statement, Wintek said that in 2009, some workers at their Suzhou factory became ill while cleaning touch display panels with N-hexane.

They sent a letter to Steve Jobs, Chief Executive Officer of Apple, seeking help after the incident.

Kylie Huang, an analyst who rates Wintek and its competitor TPK Holding Co. “outperform,” at Macquarie Securities Ltd. in Taipei said, “This case happened a long time ago, so the impact is more short-term noise. I don’t think Apple will take orders away from Wintek, though they may put pressure on the company to raise its standards.”

Apple’s visit
According to China Daily, a representative from Apple visited United Win Technology, the Wintek affiliate and listened to the employees’ demands.

None of the two Apple spokeswomen, Hong Kong- based Jill Tan and Beijing-based Carolyn Wu, answered the phone calls.

56 of the total 137 poisoned workers have been working in the company, while others have left.

Some of them received compensation, according to local requirements of highest payouts for workers with some disabilities, said Huang.

Apple, who thinks the chemical poisoning “a core violation” of employers protection and safety, needed Wintek to cease the use of chemical and leave evidence of it, released in 2011 Apple Supplier responsibility report.
